Garland Robinette, host of WWL Radio's afternoon talk show and an accomplished artist, has created a special work of art called Louisiana Love Song and donated it to the America's WETLAND Foundation to raise funds for coastal restoration. Robinette has long been a passionate advocate for Louisiana's vanishing coast. The oil painting depicts an egret in flight through a coastal swamp and is up for online auction through June 1 at www.americaswetland.com. Giclee prints also are being offered for sale on the site.
Burger King restaurants
in the Greater New Orleans area have launched the ÒCampaign for Your CauseÓ fund to give area residents a chance to vote for their favorite charity to split $100,000 in donations. Citizens across southeast Louisiana can nominate and vote for their favorite nonprofit organizations at www.CampaignForYourCause.com. Charities, schools, churches and other nonprofits are eligible. The first round of voting ends May 15. The top 10 nominees will then compete for the first-place award of $50,000.
Smoothie King
and participants in the annual Crescent City Classic 10K race helped City Park recover from the ravages of Hurricane Katrina. Proceeds from the race and ongoing donations collected at area Smoothie King stores will generate much-needed funds to support renewal at City Park, which sustained $43 million in damages during Katrina. This year's Crescent City Classic is dedicated to the renewal of City Park, the site of the race finish line and post-race festival.
Councilwoman Cynthia Hedge-Morrell
of New Orleans was stopped twice recently by state troopers for speeding in interstate highway traffic with a blue light flashing on her city-owned SUV. When ordered out of the vehicle, Morrell argued with troopers and asserted her authority as a member of the New Orleans City Council Ñ even though she was outside the city limits each time. As the mother of two NOPD officers, she ought to know better. She apologized for the incidents last Thursday and promised to be more careful in the future.
