The Best and the Worst of the Week

Temple Sinai
is hosting Sunday services for the Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church after a fire destroyed the eastern New Orleans church on July 7. When Rabbi Edward Cohn heard about the fire, he contacted Bishop Paul Morton of St. Stephen and offered the use of the synagogue, which has been undergoing a multi-million-dollar renovation. Morton gratefully accepted and services moved to the synagogue this past Sunday. St. Stephen will continue to hold services at the synagogue for at least the next four weeks.

John Georges and Gabe Corchiani
have teamed up to donate $1 million to the University of New Orleans. The money will go directly to the UNO Privateer Athletic Foundation and is the largest donation the foundation has ever received. Corchiani was a star player for the Privateers basketball team and still holds a number of school records. The university will rename the Lakefront Arena basketball court "Corchiani Court" in of honor of Corchiani's father and high school coach, Gabe Sr.

WWOZ,
the listener-supported New Orleans jazz and heritage radio station, recently received three coveted national awards. Rolling Stone magazine named WWOZ one of the country's top five radio stations in its 2008 "Best of Rock" edition. Esquire magazine awarded the station an "Esky" for being the Best Internet Radio Station. And JazzWeek, which produces a weekly airplay chart report of top jazz recordings, named WWOZ Radio Station of the Year for medium-size markets.

Gov. Bobby Jindal
vetoed legislation that would have funded improvements to school facilities across the state. The Legislature unanimously supported the measure, which had significant support from the League of Women Voters and the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Louisiana ranks fourth-lowest in state support for public school facilities. Other Jindal vetoes smack of payback against local leges who voted against Jindal's school voucher program, particularly his veto of funding for the GNO Biosciences Development District.
