In Alice Walker's The Color Purple, Celie, a young Southern woman, finds her voice as she struggles to overcome poverty and hardship. The award-winning Broadway musical adaptaion included choreography by Donald Byrd, who directed the recent New Orleans shows White Noise and Aida.
