The Deadstring Brothers

With the flood of neo-soul and garage blues pouring out of Detroit in the past few years, it's kind of a shock to the system to hear the Deadstring Brothers -- butt-kicking, truck-driving country rock with lots (and lots) of twang from the Motor City. This tour is in support of Starving Winter Report, their second full-length release for Bloodshot Records. The opening track on the album "Sacred Heart," is pure Southern rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd-style. "Talking Born Blues" has a rollicking, clang-and-bang hootenanny sound behind it that recalls Bob Dylan's -- um -- freewheeling take on the blues circa Bringing It All Back Home, with vocals that are as close as you can get to Mick Jagger's girl with "Far Away Eyes" I'm-a-country-singer diction without being annoying. The balls-out rocking country blues sound, in fact, suggests that these guys have worn through more than one copy of Exile On Main Street, but really, they pay their homage well, and why fix what ain't broke? Opening for Oteil Burbridge, current bassist for the Allman Brothers Band, and his band, the Peacemakers. With Billy Iuso and Restless Natives. Tickets $10. -- Alison Fensterstock 9 p.m. Thu., Sept. 14
