After 28 years in business, Fat City institution Crazy Johnnie's Steakhouse (3520 18th St., Metairie, 504-887-6641; www.crazyjohnnies.net) announced it will close soon. According to manager Barry Sevin, owner Johnnie Schram had been struggling for the past few months with the idea of closing, originally planning to stay open until the busy holiday season. However, she decided to close Nov. 5 when the kitchen went through its last shipment, he says. Largely due to more than 3,000 shares, likes and comments on the restaurant's Facebook post about shuttering, Crazy Johnnie's ran out of steak the next day. Sevin cites a steady financial decline as the restaurant's main reason for closing.
"The price of meat keeps going up, so you can't sell a cheap steak anymore," he said. "Also, the concept had kind of run its course." Sevin says the restaurant's most popular dishes were the "crazy" potatoes, "crazy" bread, barbecue shrimp, steaks and steak sandwiches.
