The Olivia Tremor Control at One Eyed Jacks

A co-captain of the Elephant 6 collective and creator of two underground-classic 1990s LPs, Ruston, La., band The Olivia Tremor Control became better known in the 2000s for what it hadn't done of late: recorded (nothing since 1999's skittering psych/pop collage Black Foliage: Animation Music Volume One), toured (little outside the E6 Holiday Surprise reunions), or much of anything else that resembled band-like activity. So when Will Cullen Hart mentioned in a February interview that the group had not only been laying down tracks for a new record ("30 bits we've been working on" ) but was committed to a high-profile December date in the U.K. — the All Tomorrow's Parties music festival, curated this year by OTC muse and Neutral Milk Hotel mastermind Jeff Mangum — even he sounded surprised. "It was like, 'Wow, we agreed to a gig,'" Hart said. "Eric Harris, the major drummer in the band, was like, 'I'll do it if it's 50 percent new material.' I was like, 'Forty.' He goes, 'OK.'" Six months later, that single gig has grown into a full-on two-month tour, beginning this week in New Orleans and ending in Minehead, England. And the 40 percent new material? As far as we know, they're one song into it: "North Term Reality," an entirely instrumental, tribal/industrial contribution to 2010's AUX Vol. 2 compilation. "I know it's hard to believe in something you can't see," Hart sings on Black Foliage bouncer "Mystery." Better believe he knows it best. Tickets $14. — Noah Bonaparte Pais
