The Sex Workers' Art Show

"Zeitgeist is going out with a bang," says Rene Broussard about the last event scheduled for Zeitgeist's current space. (He has not made an announcement about the new location). The Sex Workers' Art Show has been a consistent sell-out for its annual stop at Zeitgeist. The cabaret-style show of burlesque, drag, dance, music and more is put on by dancers, centerfolds, porn stars, prostitutes and other sex-industry veterans including some of the biggest names in fields that are equally exotic, erotic and esoteric. New burlesque dancer Dirty Martini and Miss Exotic World 2006 Julie Atlas Muz have performed before in New Orleans. Founder Annie Oakley, a former sex worker from Olympia, Wash., organized the first show in 1997 to bring sex workers out of the shadows and prove that they had talents and ideas that defied the marginalization of their careers in an illicit or unmentionable demimonde. Other performers include Japanese dancer Cono Snatch Zubinskaya (pictured), Jo Weldon, Amber Dawn, Kirk Read and Reginald Lamar. The variety of acts ranges from funny to disturbing, avant garde to bump and grind. Tickets $15, $10 Zeitgeist members. -- Will Coviello
