The Slits

Long before the advent of Riot Grrl, The Slits, a London-based teenage all-girl band, injected the nascent British punk scene with a dose of in-your-face estrogen. Led by the dreadlocked Ari Up " who formed the band in 1976 at the tender age of 14 " the group muscled its way into an opening slot touring with the Clash (which shared its reggae and rocksteady influences) and a Peel Session with little more than crude adolescent energy. Its debut recording, Cut, featured future Siouxsie and the Banshees drummer Budgie and, under the care of a veteran reggae producer, emerged as a fresh-sounding, genre-bending blend of dub reggae and postpunk rawness. The group re-formed with Ari Up, original Slit Tessa Pollitt and new members in 2006. Opening are the clanging garage-rock duo Shellshag, the Japanese heavy-metal oddities Peelander-Z, This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb and Future Virgins. Tickets $12. — Alison Fensterstock
