The Sophie Tucker Show with Special Guest Jimmy Durante

Known as the "last of the red hot mommas," Sophie Tucker had a voice and a figure meant for radio, but she was a stage star for much of the first half of the 20th century. Stage managers tried to find ways to disguise and distract from her larger than life size, but audiences loved her and eventually they stopped interfering. Tucker coined her hit "Some of These Days" in 1911 and was a popular performer for more than 50 years. Becky Allen revives her songbook in this cabaret show with Bob Edes playing Jimmy Durante, who had a nose for radio and just about any medium he tried. His "Schnozzle" was as much of a trademark as his signature tune "Inka Dinka Doo." Durante started out as a ragtime piano player in his native New York City and went on to star as a comedian, singer and all-around entertainer in vaudeville, on radio and in the movies. This show puts together some of their biggest hits. The Thursday preview is a benefit for the Mystic Krewe of Satyricon. Tickets $20. -- Will Coviello
