The Women

The Desperate Housewives are not the first clique of venomous, back-biting, unmitigatedly catty, husband-stealing vamps to entertain us. In this staged reading, Running with Scissors is having its campy way with The Women, a Clare Booth Luce story written for Broadway and adapted to the screen, where it garnered fame for a 1939 version starring Norma Sheerer. Mary Haines is the archetypal 1930s suburban housewife whose picture-perfect marriage becomes the subject of gossip among her high society girlfriends when news of her husband's affair becomes public. Mary trudges through the muck and mire of rumors, encountering ill-meaning friends who seek to compromise her pride and her marriage. In Running With Scissors fashion, The Women stars some familiar faces, including Brian Peterson (pictured) as Mary, Jack Long as the "other woman," Dorian Rush, Sean Patterson and Ashley Ricord as Mary's gossip-mongering friends, plus Cammie West, Brad Caldwell and Elizabeth Pearce, Donald Lewis and Liz Zibilich. The reading is a fundraiser for Running with Scissors. Tickets $25. -- Lauren LaBorde
