Tribute to the Classical Arts Winners- 2010

Winners of 2010 classical arts awards announced

The Big Easy Foundation announced its winners for achievement in opera, dance and classical music at the 16th annual Tribute to the Classical Arts awards luncheon on Tuesday, March 9.

The 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Dr. John Ware, a professor of music at Xavier University of Louisiana and the conductor and music director of the New Orleans Black Chorale. Ware, who called his musical career "a life's journey," thanked his family (many of whom were on hand), his students and his fellow faculty, before telling the audience: "My admonition to you is to continue to shine. Shine. That's the real crowning story of New Orleans."

The Arts Education Award also went to the New Orleans Piano Institute and the Musical Arts Society of New Orleans. A Special Recognition Award marked the 40th anniversary of Delta Festival Ballet.

Other awards for performances in 2009 celebrated achievements in classical music, choral singing, opera and ballet, modern and ethnic dance. Several nominated artists performed.

The Tribute to the Classical Arts was sponsored by Gambit, John and Anne Burr, WWNO-FM, Hall Piano Company, Uptown Costume and Dancewear and Coleman E. Adler & Sons. Proceeds from the event benefit the Foundation for Entertainment Development and Education, which support arts education through annual grants.
