Tumor Registry Gets $12 Million

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has awarded a seven-year, $12 million contract for the Louisiana Tumor Registry to continue tracking the cancer incidence and survival rates in the area.

LSU is one of only 18 Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program-designated cancer registries in the United States and has administrated Louisiana's tumor registry since 1995. Collectively SEER registries cover about 26 percent of the U.S. population, tracking cancer cases from diagnosis through treatment and beyond. Scientists often access information from the registry for research studies, and the statistics have been included in the NCI's annual United States Cancer Statistics and the World Health Organization's five-volume Cancer in Five Continents.

The registry helps policy makers, health professionals and patients make more informed decisions about cancer.
