Two Debate Three

Four good government groups are sponsoring a two-person debate on Mayor Marc Morial's bid for a third-term, but hizzoner himself will not participate. Instead, Morial political ally Roy Rodney will debate Ron Nabonne, president of a group to preserve term limits for the mayor, beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, at the Jewish Community Center, 5342 St. Charles Ave.

Morial has publicly challenged the announced candidates for mayor (state Sen. Paulette Irons, City Council members Jim Singleton and Troy Carter) to a debate. However, they have all declined, noting the incumbent is not a candidate in the February 2002 elections -- unless voters approve his 'Just Three' referendum on Saturday, Oct. 20.

WDSU-TV anchor Norman Robinson will moderate the Aug. 29 forum. The event is co-sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women, the League of Women Voters of New Orleans, New Orleans Business and Professional Women, and the Young Leadership Council.

Meanwhile, Susan Howell, professor of political science at the University of New Orleans, says her students will be conducting a citywide poll in September on Morial's bid to change the charter. The poll will be released sometime in October before the Oct. 20 referendum.
