Pop-up doughnut shop Upper Nine Doughnut Company has opened at Sound Cafe (2700 Chartres St., 504-947-4477) on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, adding to its Saturday service at Tracey's (2604 Magazine St., 504-897-5413), where it opened in May 2013.
Upper Nine is part of the growing Uptown craft doughnut movement with District Donuts.Sliders.Brew, Manhattanjack and the recently opened Blue Dot on Tchoupitoulas Street. Upper Nine is known for its local and seasonal ingredients (often from nearby dairies and farms) and ambitious flavor combinations, including strawberry and Creole cream cheese mousse, fresh fig with goat cheese mousse, Szechuan lemon and blackberry jam with Thai peanut glaze. Upper Nine also plans to introduce coffee and espresso at the Sound Cafe location.
"We've always wanted to be in that neighborhood," says Douglas Clasen, co-founder of Upper Nine. "The way we've been doing things at Tracey's, we've been changing up the menu every single week, so this will give us an opportunity to keep some familiar favorites on the menu as well as come up with new things each week."
The pop-up is open 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday-Saturday at Sound Cafe, and 8 a.m.-11 a.m. Saturday at Tracey's.
