Vagina Monologues

With the Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler (pictured) took her one-woman show about shedding taboos and launched a phenomenon that's made her internationally famous and the de facto heroine of one, perhaps overdue, victory in the ongoing battle against sexism. The show's monologues range from comic tales of realizing "vagina" is not a dirty word to disturbing tales of repression and rape. But the overall effect is a tent-revival testimonial of sexual and personal realization. The show is now the primary vehicle of V-Day, an organization that promotes annual performances to raise awareness and funds for women's shelters, health organizations and other causes. In fact, "V" could now stand for variety as much as vagina, victory, vulva or any of a number of other V initiatives (described on the www.vday.org Web site). The 2007 international V-Day campaign is organized around the issue of stopping violence against women. Proceeds from the AshŽ performance (tickets $15) benefit the Upper 9th Women's Center and Crescent House. The Tulane Public Health performances (tickets $10) benefit the Metropolitan Center for Women & Children. -- Will Coviello
