Venus Rising: Women Artists from the Gulf South

Her looming pink form appears like an oversized hallucination on St. Claude Avenue, but no, it's not because of anything you ate or drank. Venus is alive and well, towering over the back of the former Capt. Pete's Oyster Factory — once a seafood processing plant, now a gallery where Gulf Coast women artists strut their stuff. When Capt. Pete died after hurricane Katrina, the building was bought by Nathan Shroyer who was inspired to provide an exhibition space for women artists after seeing a Gorilla Girls show in Washington D.C. Made up of works by 12 women proficient in various media, it's a lively, diverse and surprisingly cohesive show. And where else can you see artists' handmade books in stalls where once oysters were shucked? The space is open from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. — D. Eric Bookhardt
