Ride your curves — don't hide your curves" is the philosophy of Jaclyn McCabe, the entrepreneur behind The Voluptuous Vixen (538 Madison St., 529-3588; www.thevoluptuousvixen.com). After being a frustrated shopper for most of her adult life, McCabe decided in 2006 to open a boutique to help dress fashion-forward plus-size women.
"I've cried in enough dressing rooms," McCabe says of trying to find fashionable clothing for full-figured women. "I want women to think of The Voluptuous Vixen as a fun, safe, comfortable and satisfying shopping experience."
Finding the right merchandise for her boutique was the biggest hurdle in opening the store. "It's hard to find form-fitting, sexy clothes for plus-size women," McCabe says. "Almost everything is either tacky or has a poor fit."
Her frustration prompted her to contact designers and request they make clothes in plus sizes. Because of her persistence, some of those designers asked her to be a consultant, and she now offers her expertise to help them develop their new collections. McCabe also has started her own clothing line, Blue Goose, which will be sold in stores this spring.
In the coming months, Voluptuous Vixen shoppers will see a large selection of what McCabe calls "fest" dresses. "We're getting in a lot of brightly colored cotton maxi dresses with bold patterns, perfect to wear to a festival," she says.
