Natural ways to hydrate during hot summer activities 

The amount of water a person should consume in a day varies according to body size, activity level, medications, weather, health conditions and other variables. People should drink water, of course, but there are other ways to hydrate that are delicious and easy.

  Vegetables and fruits such as celery, lettuce, watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes, berries and oranges are as much as 85 percent water. Use them in salads, soups, smoothies or alone as snacks.

  Puree fruit (a single type or a mix of several fruits), strain chunks and pulp if preferred, and freeze in ice trays or frozen pop forms for a healthy frozen treat.

  Make carrying a reusable water bottle a habit, and take small drinks throughout the day. If you wait until you're thirsty, you're already dehydrating.

  Add a squeeze of lemon, lime or orange to your water, or a splash of juice (no sugar added).

  Chilled dishes made with water-rich vegetables include vichyssoise and gazpacho soups, salsas and salads. Fruits also can be used in salads or pureed for soups, smoothies and juices.
