About Florence Welch

Florence Welch emerged after the Amy Winehouse-led influx of female British singers as an amalgamation of their best parts. Her 2009 album Lungs showcases white-girl soul (Adele, Winehouse), witty lyrics (Kate Nash) and the ethereal pop of Bat for Lashes and early Kate Bush. Her persona is a mix of Winehouse's bawdy rocker streak — especially in Lungs' lone garage-rock track "Kiss With a Fist" — and Lily Allen's fashion blog-friendly It Girl style. Lungs earned mostly favorable reviews. described it as "a mystic brand of pop that's part Annie Lennox, Grace Slick and Joanna Newsom" and The Onion's A.V. Club called it "something that manages to be grandiose, relatable and incessantly catchy all at the same time." Rolling Stone says, aptly, "The best bits feel like being chased through a moonless night by a sexy moor witch." — Lauren LaBorde
