What About Luv?

Who among us hasn't considered jumping off a bridge? Well, maybe not all of us, and maybe very few of us recently -- we've had our fill of water. But when it comes to the frustrations of love, we've all, at the very least, wanted to pull our hair out. Minacapelli's Dinner Playhouse presents Jeffrey Sweet's What About Luv? as the Slidell theater's first post-storm production. This irreverent musical comedy was adapted from Murray Schisgal's play Luv (which originally starred Alan Arkin and was directed by Mike Nichols in 1964). Jeffrey Sweet adapted the play into a musical in collaboration with Susan Birkenhead (lyrics) and Howard Marren (music). In 1984, Nathan Lane (The Producers, Bird Cage) starred in the first Off-Broadway musical adaptation, then called simply Love. Soon after, the critically acclaimed musical was produced in both London and Tokyo. In the Minacapelli's production, Rickie Luke, Paul Page and Sarah Pagones conjecture about the idea of love and its relationship to happiness. The play opens with Harry Berlin contemplating suicide on a bridge. He's interrupted when Milt Manville, a former college acquaintance, comes along with the intention of pushing his wife off the bridge so he can be with his mistress. Instead, the two men come up with a plan that will make them both happy, but does it? Reservations required. Tickets $35 (dinner and show).
