What foods are heart-healthy?

Keeping a healthy heart may be one of the best things you can ever do for yourself. Besides regular exercise and not smoking, having a well-balanced diet is the best way to keep your heart healthy. There are plenty of nutritious foods you can eat, but there are also foods that are specific to a healthy heart. Incorporate the foods below into your diet, and get a head start on the road to keeping your heart healthy.

1. Blueberries are at the top of the list as one of the most powerful disease-fighting foods.

2. Salmon is a cold-water fish that is a great source of protein and is also packed with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. The American Heart Association advises eating salmon and other omega-3 rich foods twice a week for benefits that go beyond heart health.

3. Soy protein can lower triglycerides, which help prevent cardiovascular disease and keep your heart strong and healthy.

4. Oatmeal helps lower cholesterol levels, keep you regular and may help prevent certain cancers.

5. Spinach contains multiple phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals (especially folate and iron) that fight disease, protect against heart disease and preserve your eyesight.
