Low-cost Veterinary services
• The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LA/SPCA) (1700 Mardi Gras Blvd., Algiers, 368-5191, www.la-spca.org) offers spay and neuter surgeries for dogs under 60 pounds and cats older than 8 weeks. The cost is $25 for a feral cat or kitten (includes ear-tipping and rabies vaccination), $40 owned male cat/kitten, $50 owned female cat/kitten, $75 dog/puppy (under 20 pounds), $100 dog/puppy (21-60 pounds). The LA/SPCA holds "Wellness Wednesdays," a program that provides a basic exam, a heartworm check for dogs or FeLeuk-FIV test for cats, and all annual vaccinations. Optional micro-chipping is also available for $15.
Additionally, The LA/SPCA is holding a Rabies Drive on March 28 at nine firehouses throughout Orleans Parish. Pet owners can receive a rabies vaccine tag and license for for their animal for $15 (cash only) at the LA/SPCA or one of the firehouses. Locations include: Engine 1 Fire House (2920 Magazine St.), Engine 4 Fire House (6900 Downman Road), Engine 12 Fire House (5600 Franklin Ave.), Engine 17 Fire House (2000 Woodland Drive), Engine 18 Fire House (773 Harrison Ave.), Engine 24 Fire House (1040 Poland Ave.), Engine 25 Fire House (2430 S. Carrollton Ave.), Engine 27 Fire House (2118 Elysian Fields Ave.), Engine 35 Fire House (964 N. Carrollton Ave.) and LA/SPCA (1700 Mardi Gras Blvd.).
• The Southern Animal Foundation (1823 Magazine St., 975-7387, www.southernanimalfoundation.org) provides spay/neuter surgery with an option of annual vaccinations. Costs are $20 for cats and an additional $10 for an optional vaccination package; $50 for a dog under 60 pounds and an additional $40 for optional vaccination package; and $60 for a dog over 60 pounds and an additional $40 for optional vaccination package. The foundation also offers annual exams and vaccinations, dental cleanings, heartworm treatment, behavior counseling and emergency/urgent care. "Spay Jefferson" is a spay/neuter program for residents of Jefferson Parish. The cost is $10 for spay/neuter surgery for cats/dogs.
• Pets R Our World Mobile Clinic (224-1996) offers spay/neuter surgery, dental exams, heartworm treatment, and vaccinations by appointment.
• The Bywater Art Market (Markey Park at Piety and Royal streets, 944-7900, www.art-restoration.com/bam) turns into the Bywater Bark Market for one day in March and October, offering vaccinations and micro-chipping for the day. The next event is planned for Oct. 16.
• The SULA Foundation (www.sulafoundation.org) offers dog vaccinations for $15 for pit bull terriers and $45 for other breeds. It also provides free spay/neuter surgery for pit bulls. SULA often has pit bulls available for adoption.
