Hey Blake,
I remember a place called Sinatraville in the 1960s. I think it was on St. Louis Street. What can you tell us about it?
Richie
Dear Richie,
You remember correctly. In 1967, the nightclub Sinatraville at 720 St. Louis St. did exist, but its name changed in 1968 to Sinatraville Al Hirt's Night Club. For a brief time, you might have gone to Al Hirt's Casa La Tina Restaurant at 722 St. Louis St., but it closed in 1970.
Al Hirt was connected with several places in the French Quarter, beginning in 1963. There was Al Hirt's Basin Street South at 809 St. Louis St., and his famous place — Al Hirt's Night Club at 501 Bourbon St. at the corner of Bourbon and St. Louis streets, which he ran for 20 years. Today, there's no sign of the old Sinatraville, and Al's place is called the Big Easy.
