Items with the most color will offer the best health benefits. For example, choose a red or yellow bell pepper over green one. When choosing salad greens, pick dark greens like spinach, romaine or arugula instead of iceberg lettuce.
Another way to ensure that you are making the most of your produce purchases when you shop for fruits and vegetables is to search the fresh produce isle first for foods that are in season, look fresh and are reasonably priced. If you do not find what you are looking for there first, then it is OK to go to the freezer aisle for your needs.
