Anyone can possess and administer naloxone to overdose victims. CVS has announced it will stock the medicine and sell it with a standing prescription to anyone who requests it. Two other pharmacies already sell it without a prescription: Crescent City Pharmacy (2240 Simon Bolivar Ave.) sells naloxone intranasal kits for about $60; Walgreens in the University Medical Center (2000 Canal St.) sells it for about $28.

If you need naloxone but can't afford it, there is an organization aimed at providing the drug free of charge, but appointments can take up to a week. The New Orleans harm reduction group Trystereo can be reached at (504) 535-4766 (text messages preferred), or at Nolaharmdreduction@gmail.com.

Naloxone is provided free after interested parties undergo a brief training session.
