WIC—approved Foods 

The following is a semi-comprehensive list of all the foods WIC subsidizes monthly as of September 2009. Substitutions are listed, as are foods not allowed in each category. Organic substitutions are not allowed in any category. For a more detailed list of which foods are included in which packages, visit www.dhh.louisiana.gov/offices/?id=320.

Infant formula: (as printed on food instrument)

Infant cereal: 8-ounce box, least expensive brand.

Infant fruits and vegetables: 4-ounce jars of Beech-Nut, Gerber or Nature's Goodness. Fruits: applesauce, banana, peach, pear or plum. Vegetables: squash, carrots, sweet potato, green beans or peas. Single ingredient only, no mixes.

Infant meats and poultry: 2.5-ounce jars of beef, chicken, lamb, turkey and veal with broth or gravy. Single ingredient only.

Milk: Homogenized, all fat levels, gallon and quart containers, least expensive brand. Can substitute a soy beverage. No flavored or goat's milk.

Cheese: 8-ounce to 16-ounce blocks or slices (not individually wrapped) of American, cheddar, mozzarella or Swiss, least expensive brand. Can substitute reduced fat, fat-free and "lite" versions. No cheese spreads, imported, shredded or spiced cheeses.

Eggs: Large size white eggs, least expensive brand. No other sizes, no brown eggs.

Peanut butter: 18-ounce container of smooth, crunchy or whipped. Can substitute low sodium or low sugar. 

Dry peas, beans: Beans: 1-pound package of black, kidney, Lima, navy, pinto and soy, any brand. Peas: black-eyed, chickpea, lentils. No canned.

Canned tuna fish: 5-ounce or 6-ounce cans, any brand in oil or water (no albacore or solid white, no diet). Can substitute canned pink salmon, Star-Kist or Chicken of the Sea.

Fresh fruits and vegetables: Any brand, any type of fruit or vegetables, including organic, pre-cut, bagged salads, fruit in plastic containers, etc. No dried fruit or nut mixtures, no white potatoes (sweet potatoes are OK).

100 percent fruit juice: Frozen: 11-ounce to 12-0unce cans in many brands and types. Single strength juice: 64 ounces Campbell's tomato, Welch's grape, Nestle's Juicy Juice, Tropicana orange, Lucky Leaf Apple or Northland Cranberry Grape.

Bread: Whole wheat 16-ounce loaf, Nature's Own. No white bread, no bagels, rolls or buns.

Brown rice: 16-ounce Riceland brand. No white, mixed or flavored rice.

Cereal: 12-ounce, 14-ounce, 18-ounce, 24-ounce or 36-ounce boxes or bags of various brands from General Mills (Cheerios, Chex), Kellogg's (Mini Wheats), Malt-o-Meal (Mini-Spooners), Post (Bunches of Oats), Quaker (oatmeal), and B&G Foods (Cream of Wheat).
