Wife for Hire

Everyone needs an extra set of hands sometimes, especially when it comes to homemaking duties. What if party planning, home project management and even travel help services were just a phone call away?

"The Occasional Wife is a consultant for everyone's busy 21st century lives," says Kay McCaskill-Morrison, owner of the company. "There's a sense of bringing back the past, when one person took care of all the details. It's hard to find that person in a family unit nowadays."

McCaskill-Morrison organizes her clients' household activities, duties that traditionally would have fallen to a stay-at-home wife. She plans a variety of events -- from kids' birthday parties to weddings -- researches consumer goods, helps travelers take advantage of frequent-user rewards to make the most of vacations and heads up home remodeling and redecoration projects.

McCaskill-Morrison first had the idea for The Occasional Wife consulting service when she and her husband both had busy full-time jobs and two kids to care for.

"We ran around like crazy, and we used to joke all the time that we needed a wife," she says.

The idea was revisited when McCaskill-Morrison helped her male-divorcee friends organize their homes and cater to their children's needs.

"There was always this joke. They'd say, 'If only she wasn't married!' And my husband would respond, 'Well, she can be your occasional wife.'"

From those beginnings, the Occasional Wife Service took off. McCaskill-Morrison retired from her 11-year post as an executive in the hospitality industry and devoted herself to her new consulting business. Now, she gets calls from busy clients all over the city as well as outside New Orleans. She tries to make life easier for busy couples, especially by relieving overwhelmed homemakers. "It's usually one person who always does thoughtful things for their partner," she says. "Well, now I can help plan nice things for the other person."

McCaskill-Morgan hopes her business will continue to expand. "I'm really trying to tap into the movie production crews coming in," she says. "We can help with everything they need. It would be like a one-stop shop."
