Merlot-Malbec 1999


For proof that some wines are made to drink with food, invite this spunky red to your next dinner party. Made in South Africa's Stellenbosch region at a female-centric winery (both owner and winemaker are women), it's a medium-bodied glass of black pepper, wood char and dried fruits on its own. With herb-crusted lamb chops or roasted garlic smeared on toasts, however, bitter chocolate-covered raisins melt into black fruits that, ultimately, soften to cherries.
