The Columbia Valley appellation, located in the eastern part of Washington state with its almost desert-like climate, presents a stark contrast to the rainy area west of the Cascade Mountain range. The region's northern latitude allows for long sunny days -- at least two hours more daylight than Napa Valley vines 800 miles to the south -- producing slow, evenly-ripened, intensely concentrated fruit. Cool nights provide the vines with a needed rest, encouraging balanced acidity in the grapes. Echoes of red berry fruit aromas continue on the palate with focused flavors of Bing cherries, raspberries and currants, with spice and pepper notes and hints of licorice and tar. An elegant wine with silky tannins. Good with venison, pork and beef. Available at Whole Foods Market on Magazine Street, Dorignac's and Wine Down in Mandeville.
