Wine of the Week

Monastrell, the Spanish name for the Mouvedre grape which flourishes in Southern Rhone, has been carefully nurtured by Bodegas Castrano to produce this concentrated and powerful wine. Generally used as a blending grape, here Monastrell holds its own. On the nose, aromas of ripe, jammy dark fruit mingle with floral notes of peonies and roses, along with whiffs of mint and licorice. On the palate, this meaty, well-balanced wine offers cassis, blackberries, black currants and cherries with a hint of oak. At its best in 2006; when drinking now, will improve with splash decanting. Good with beef, roast duck, venison and other gamey delights. Available at Cork & Bottle, Bacchanal, and Hugh's Wine Cellar.
