Wine of the Week

Of all the Cotes du Rhone wines produced primarily in Southern Rhone, only 96 tiny villages are allowed to attach the "villages" designation to their wines as a mark of superiority. Located near Gigondas, Rasteau is considered one of the top five of these. A classic blend dominated by Grenache with Syrah and Mouvedre in the mix, grapes for this wine were sourced from hillside vineyards where stony soils cling to steep slopes. Plum scented with leathery notes, the deeply colored wine exhibits generous ripe cherry fruit flavors on the palate with a hint of the savage amid spice and peppery undertones. A good accompaniment to duck and game dishes, sausage, cassoulet and hardy cheeses. Where to buy it: The Wine Seller, Sip Wine Market, Bacchanal. Where to drink it: Chateau DuLac. (Listings current at press time.)
