Wine of the Week

Like California, where Chenin Blanc has fallen from favor, South African Chenin Blanc — the country's major white grape — is losing ground to the more popular Sauvignon Blancs and Chardonnays. But just as France's Loire Valley produces distinctive wines from its indigenous grape, the Simonsig from Stellenbosch shows intense and flavorful varietal character. Scented with fresh, ripe, honey-tinged apples and pears with floral notes, the wine's crisp acidity is balanced by a lush richness with off-dry tropical fruit flavors. Good as an aperitif or with seafood, curry and other spicy foods. Where to buy it: Sip Wine Market. Where to drink it: Reginelli's Pizzerias' two Uptown locations, Elmwood and Kenner. (Listings current at press time.)
