Wine of the Week

Syrah, the same varietal as Shiraz and one of the world's most widely planted red grapes, arguably achieves its ultimate expression in French wines from the Rhone Valley. Unlike southern Rhone appellations where multiple red and white varietals are permitted, northern Rhone appellation laws require that Syrah is the only red grape used. Aged 15 months in 1- and 2-year-old oak barrels, this well-structured wine exudes intense aromas of dark berries, licorice and black pepper followed by bold blackberry and ripe plum flavors in a silky, smooth finish. Drink now and over the next five years. Good with roasted meats, hearty casseroles and aged cheese. Where to buy it: Elio's Wine Warehouse and Dorignac's. Where to drink it: Besh Steak House at Harrah's Casino. (Listings current at press time.)
