Wine of the Week

The Abadia de Santa Maria de Retuerta monastery and vineyards were established in 1146. The estate was purchased in 1988, and the winery was revitalized over the next decade. Made with a blend of 60 percent Tempranillo and 40 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine ages for 12 months Ñ two-thirds American oak and one-third in French oak. This well-made, medium-bodied wine offers focused red berry fruit fragrances, graphite, smoky oak and mineral aromas followed by dark cherries, cassis and spice flavors with smooth tannins on the palate. For the best results, it should be decanted. It drinks well now and will continue to mature over the next 3-6 years. Good with tapas, sausage with onions and peppers, roast lamb, burgers and hearty dishes like meatballs with marinara sauce. Where to buy it: Bacchanal, HopperÕs Wines and Spirits and Whole Foods Market Uptown and in Metairie. (Listings current at press time.)
