Wine of the Week

Named for the 14th century French popeÕs country home near Avignon, Ch‰teauneuf-du-Pape, Òthe new castle of the pope,Ó can lay claim to southern RhoneÕs best-known and best-loved wine. A dense blend of 65 percent Grenache, 15 percent Syrah, 10 percent Cinsault, 5 percent Mourvédre and 5 percent supporting varietals, this wine was aged in a combination of new and old oak. Aromas of crushed blackberries, leather and a gamey quality are followed by intense flavors of more ripe black fruit, spice, coffee, pepper and earth notes in a well-integrated, firm tannic structure. It will age well over the next five years. A great match with venison, game, lamb and beef. Where to buy it: W.I.N.O. Where to drink it: W.I.N.O., La Provence, Chops Bistro, TommyÕs Cuisine and RuthÕs Chris Steak House. (Listings current at press time.)
