The premier producer of the Campania region's oldest wines, Mastroberardino makes Lacryma Christi from 100 percent Piedirosso grapes sourced from vineyards full of the rich, volcanic soils around Mt. Vesuvius. Aged six months in French oak, the wine exhibits enticing aromas of ripe black cherry and cranberry along with nuances of clove, pepper and some minerality. On the palate, look for rich flavors of plum, strawberry and raspberry with spice and earth notes, balanced acidity and firm tannins. Decanting is recommended. Drink it now or over the next five years with foods like sausages, meat-based pasta dishes, grilled chops and game.
