Wine of the Week

Malbec has flourished in Argentina, and the varietal also is emerging in neighboring Chile as a noteworthy contender. Aged six months in American oak, this wine is from the Montes family's value-oriented line. Dense and rich, the wine exhibits aromas of ripe, dark fruit, nice spice and hints of earth and vanilla. On the palate, the wine shows complexity with layers of flavorful black cherry, plum with licorice and leather notes, and firm, even tannins. It's good paired with roast duck, game, beef, chorizo, pork chops and hearty cheeses. Where to buy it: Prytania Liquor Store, Whole Foods Market Uptown, Schiro's Grocery and Deli, Vieux Carre Wine & Spirits, Super Laborie's Food Market in Marrero and Gretna, Cost Plus World Markets, Hugh's Wine Cellar in Mandeville and some Rouses. Where to drink it: Ristorante da Piero, Theo's Pizza, One Eyed Jacks, Liborio Restaurant and Blue Tomato Restaurant. (Listings current at press time.)
