Wine of the Week

This great value originates from the Jeune family, which has made Rhone wines for six generations. The wine is made with 100 percent Counoise —one of 13 grape varieties permitted in Chateauneuf—du-Pape (CNP) — from 30-year-old vines grown on the western side of the Rhone River just outside CNP and Cotes du Rhone appellations. By French law, the wine must be labeled as a simple "vins de pays," however, it is anything but simple. Characteristic aromas of ripe blackberries, violets, whiffs of earth and spice lead into more seductive blackberry, black cherry and plum flavors in a velvety textured, lingering finish. It is even better when decanted. Enjoy it with grilled meat, game, sausages and hearty stews. Where to buy it: Cork & Bottle, Stein's Market & Deli, Vieux Carré Wine & Spirits and Bacchanal. Where to drink it: Bayona, Herbsaint, Lilette, Meauxbar Bistro and The Country Club. (Listings current at press time.)
