Wine of the Week

Wine enthusiasts are rediscovering the riches of France's southern Rhone region, finding lots of affordable, food-friendly labels to pair with a variety of dishes. Aged nearly a year in used French oak before bottling, this wine is blended predominantly from Grenache grapes, along with a heady infusion of Syrah and a smaller percentage of Mourvédre. A classic style from southern Rhone, this medium-bodied, robust wine exhibits black fruit aromas with tar, tobacco, licorice, mocha and characteristic herbes de Provence notes. On the palate, ripe fruit flavors of blackcurrant, cherry and plum are accented by black pepper, spice, some oaky nuances and an appealing earthiness with mild tannins on the finish. It's excellent with grilled meats, sausages, roasts, pates and poultry. Where to buy it: The Wine Seller. Where to drink it: Marigny Brasserie and Dick and Jenny's. (Listings current at press time.)
