2007 Garnacha de Fuego Old Vines

Calatayud, Spain / $8-$9 Retail

A hot-weather grape, yet more of a cold, wintry-night wine, this well-made, extremely affordable Garnacha (in French, "Grenache") is produced from 50- to 70-year-old vines in north central Spain. Medium-bodied with an excellent structure, the wine exhibits both ripe red berry and blackberry fruit aromas with a pleasing minerality, some peppery spice and a bit of tar. In the mouth, the wine is dense and vibrant with cherry, cranberry and plum flavors, balanced acidity, some heat (14 percent alcohol), heavy tannins and additional spiciness on the finish. Decant it and let it aerate for an hour or more before serving. Tremendously versatile, it's good with stews, red meats, barbecue, tapas, pizza, hardy cheeses and game dishes.
