Winning Smiles

The re-emerging neighborhood has been home for the past 15 years to the dentistry practice of Dr. Deborah Lesem, who maintained an office at the intersection of West End and Robert E. Lee boulevards before Hurricane Katrina devastated the area. Like much of her clientele, Dr. Lesem is making plans to return to the area in the fall and re-establish her practice there.

Lesem, who describes the patients she worked with at her former location as "great," says, "We want to be back in the heart of Lakeview like before. We are coming back."

Having earned an undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University before attending LSU's New Orleans-based dentistry school, Lesem has always operated her own practice. Her philosophy has remained the same for all 15 years: full-service family dentistry, working with everyone from several generations in a family to individuals looking for cosmetic work.

A lot of Lesem's patients come in specifically for cosmetic work, she says. "The two most common cosmetic procedures are bleaching and bonding," she says. Lesem describes bleaching as a teeth-cleansing process that improves color, whereas bonding is a procedure that adds a thin, white layer of filling to a tooth to enhance shape, color or alignment.

In terms of general family dentistry, Lesem's office, now located in a space shared with Dr. Ryan Thibodaux (815 N. Causeway Blvd., Metairie, 833-2220), offers everything from routine check-ups to cavity fillings, bridgework, crowns and root canals.

"It's a full-service practice," the dentist says. "Everything from general family (dentistry) needs to surgeries to cosmetic help is offered." De-stress Holistically Whole Foods Market and Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center are offering a free seminar in which Dr. Henri Roca, chief of integrative medicine at LSUHSC, will explain how trauma affects the brain and how to deal with stress without using medication. The seminars are scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 8, at Whole Foods Arabella Station (5600 Magazine St., call 899-9119, ext. 210 to register) and from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 22, at the Metairie store (3420 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie, call 888-8225 ext. 212 to register). The programs are free, but space is limited so you must register.
