Women, Symbols and Icons: Recent Paintings by Luz Maria Lopez

Think you've seen it all? How about the Mayan zodiac? Yep, figures such as the serpent, "Coatle," and the jaguar, "Ocelotl," as well as a host of other iconic figures from Mayan mythology and astrology populate Luz Maria Lopez's latest series of mixed-media paintings. The prominence of females, sometimes with surprisingly large feet, is a theme the Honduras native says harks to all the strong women in her family. "My grandmother would often say, 'Always on your feet, never on your knees,' which is why I paint them solid, like Mayan stone steles, weather beaten but still standing through it all." But of their sometimes almost Disney-like features, Lopez says, "I painted them with pretty faces to show that there is beauty in physical as well as spiritual strength." -- D. Eric Bookhardt
