Words & Music: a Literary Feast in New Orleans

Normally the subjects of daily news stories, topics like terrorism, immigration and environmental exploitation get a literary treatment this weekend at Words & Music. This year's theme of 'When Cultures Collide: The Fallout for Literature and Life" will be explored in panel discussions and seminars with writers from around the globe, including Robert Owen Butler, Ibtisam Barakat (pictured), Christopher Drew, Reza Aslan, Marie Arana, Elizabeth Dewberry, Roy Blount, Jr., Rodger Kamenetz, Peter Cooley, Nicole Cooley, Julie Smith and Loida Maritza Perez. '[The choice of theme] was not political, but instead comes from an interest in the humane side of cultural conflicts and everyday discriminations how these impact the individual's life and the writer's work," says Rosemary James, the co-founder of the Pirate's Alley Faulkner Society, which initiated the literary festival in 1997. More than 60 writers, poets, musicians, critics and filmmakers will be participating in poetry and fiction readings, master classes, panel discussions and seminars designed for aspiring and working writers as well as book enthusiasts. The Faulkner Society is a nonprofit literary and educational organization that supports developing writers. Events will be held at the Hotel Monteleone and other locations. See the Web site for complete information. Ticket prices for events vary, $325 for a all-inclusive weekend pass. " Lindsey Netherly
