WTUL Marathon 2008 CD-Release Party 

The stalwart college-radio DJs at WTUL have been busting their collective rear since the end of March with their annual Rock On Survival Marathon pledge drive, which has included several affiliated gigs around town and the annual 24-hour DJ weekend. A selection of the local alternative music that the station tirelessly supports is on Songs From the Basement, Vol. 6, the fund-drive premium that features choice cuts from local indie artists, including '80s New Wavers the Cold, world fusion tricksters the Zydepunks, and sweet Cajun country from the Figs, among others. In a jazz and heritage town, WTUL is a lonely outlet for independent rock 'n' roll, and since Hurricane Katrina, the station has triumphed against the odds. It's finally returned to the basement studios at Tulane's student center, very recently returned to webcasting, and frankly, it's stayed on the air, which is a victory in itself for free-form progressive radio. Celebrating all this at the release party is an eclectic cast of local favorites: glam-punks the Bad Off, instrumental prog-rockers I, Octopus, '80s-style pop-punksters the Tomatoes and the ebullient cowpunk of rock 'n' roll survivors Dash Rip Rock (pictured). Dash Rip Rock also plays a free 5:30 p.m. show at Whole Foods Market (5600 Magazine St.) where the CD will be sold. Tickets $10. — Alison Fensterstock
