Xala

Senegalese writer and later filmmaker Ousmane Sembéne (pictured) grew up in Senegal and embraced the struggle against colonialism. In his later years, he also became critical of corrupt African leaders who took power following independence in some countries. Based on his novel of the same name, Xala is a comedic satire about greed and corruption in which a successful member of a political ruling group takes a third wife, who is younger than his daughter. He also comes under a curse of impotence ('xala" in Wolof) and seeks to cure himself leading to ever more ruinous events. Free admission. — Will Coviello
