Young American : Mixed-media collages by Marcus Kenney

Of late, Marcus Kenney has been on a roll, with gallery shows all over the country. A thirtysomething, Georgia-based collage artist educated in Savannah, Ga., and Monroe, La., Kenney creates whimsical mixed-media paintings from salvaged materials such as children's book illustrations, receipts, photographs and old letters, all jumbled into what Marcia Wood, his Atlanta gallery dealer calls "a disarming mŽlange of imagery that prods the viewer into a deeper discourse on consumer culture and the nature of beauty in a disposable world." Touching on a range of social issues, Kenney focuses on the ever-evolving mythology of childhood in American culture with images that hark to the most innocent of fairy tales and the darker corners of the Internet. According to Atlanta Constitution critic Jerry Cullum, "the technique of collage has rarely been put to more intelligently entertaining uses." -- D. Eric Bookhardt
