Visions of Excellence: Photography Show

6 p.m.-9 p.m. Sat., Dec. 13; 1:30 p.m.-4 p.m. Sun., Dec. 14; through January

Louisiana State Museum, Arsenal Gallery at the Cabildo, 701 Chartres St., 568-6968; www.poyi.org

In "Searching for Solace — Katrina Survivor" (pictured), The Times-Picayune's Ted Jackson captured a seemingly supernatural moment: a New Orleans native, cloaked in a flag from his mother's casket and hovering on the steps of her vanished Lower Ninth Ward home, raising his arms like wings toward the sky while a raging tempest unloads around him. The image stands tall among the 49 other towering works — selected from a pool of more than 44,000 entries to the Pictures of the Year International (POYi) competition — spotlighted in "Visions of Excellence," a central exhibition of PhotoNOLA, the New Orleans Photo Alliance's annual celebration taking place throughout the city during the month of December. The opening reception is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and two discussions augment the display on (starting at 1:30 p.m.) Sunday: "From Szathmari to Magnum: The Origins of Photojournalism," an illustrated talk by LSM curator Tony Lewis, and a panel titled "Promise and Peril: The Changing Face of Photojournalism" featuring Jackson, POYi director Rick Shaw and others. Free with regular museum admission. — Pais
