New Orleans is synonymous with jazz,
a musical form born and nurtured here in the "Cradle of Jazz."

The diverse cultures and talents that spawned jazz in the city also influence other types of music and draw top musicians seeking to develop their forms.

This is hometown to music heavyweights such as Al Hirt, Ellis, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Allen Toussaint, Pete Fountain, The Radiators, a whole bunch of Nevilles and Harry Connick Jr. -- just to name a few! But it also is teeming with alternative music venues, rising stars and notables waiting to be discovered.

The city, known internationally as a music mecca, has as many variations of music as notes on a scale, and natives like to sample them all. New Orleans is one of the few places where a music lover can get hot jams and a burger at Snug Harbor, roll over to Mid City Lanes Rock 'N' Bowl for some zydeco and pin action, catch the last set at the original Tipitina's and experience something really eclectic at the Mermaid Lounge -- all in one night.

New Orleans' character is formed by its influx of French, Italian and African natives; French, Spanish and American rule; pirates and fortune seekers; voodoo; Cajuns; Creoles; port commerce and enriching contributions from a gumbo of cultures. The city's literary scene enjoys a remarkable past and present, from Pulitzer Prize winners Walker Percy and Truman Campote, to megapopular vampire novelist Anne Rice and Pulitze Prize winner Richard Ford. The city has spawned more artists and galleries than any city of comparable size, ranking among the top ten in the nation. View the art that results from those unions at the numerous galleries that feature the works of local and national artists and crafts people.
