In a city where options for a Korean meal are scant, a new restaurant offering bulgogi
is a welcome addition. Enter Gogi Korean Restaurant
(4620 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie, 504-872-9992), a Korean eatery that opened earlier this month.
Gogi takes the spot formerly occupied by Japanese restaurant Sushipop. It serves a short menu of mostly authentic Korean dishes. Owner Jae Kim runs the restaurant with his mother, who worked at Korean restaurants in California and Las Vegas before moving to New Orleans.
Meals are accompanied by the Korean side dishes known as banchan
, an assortment of items including zucchini and cucumber kimchi, seaweed salad and fish cakes.
The opening menu includes appetizers such as the glass noodle dish japchae
(a type of scallion pancake), rice cakes served with spicy gochujang sauce, Korean dumplings and Korean-style garlic chicken wings.
Soups include the fiery tofu and kimchi stew, kimchi jigae,
and soon dubu
(a milder tofu stew with vegetables and a choice of beef or pork). Entrees include the stone pot dish bibimbap
(thinly sliced marinated rib-eye), breaded chicken or pork katsu and Korean-style short ribs.
The owners may add Korean-style barbecue. Gogi Korean Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Monday.
