Pita-Based Philanthropy

Last spring, local restaurateurs Gaby Saliba, Tarek Tay and Hicham Khodr began a generous community-giving program at their newest restaurant, Table One. Each month, they picked a different nonprofit in the area and pledged 20 percent of one day’s restaurant sales as a donation to support its programs. They held the promotion on

Wednesdays to give their restaurant a little mid-week boost and at the same time gave customers the opportunity to help support a local cause without doing anything except dining out.

Table One is gone now, and its seemingly prime Magazine Street address has been leased to the local Little Tokyo chain of Japanese restaurants. But Saliba, Tay and Khodr, who do business now under the name 3-of-a-Kind Restaurant Group, are reviving the old Table One charitable program at their two full-service Byblos restaurants.

Called Dine Out for Charity, the first Byblos editions will be held simultaneously on Wednesday, Oct. 24. The Louisiana Children's Museum is the beneficiary of the 20 percent sales share.

Table One was able to raise a total of $16,000 through its monthly Dine Out for Charity events, supporting groups including the Audubon Zoo, City Park, Children’s Hospital and the National World War II Museum.

The participating Byblos restaurants are located at 3218 Magazine St. and 1501 Metairie Rd.
